Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 11 April 2003, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme documents the conferral of undergraduate, honours, postgraduate and doctoral qualifications across the university’s faculties, including Commerce and Law, and records academic distinctions, honours, colours and half-colours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor G.J. Gerwel, with D.R. Woods serving as Vice-Chancellor. Dr Trudi Thomas addressed the congregation, and Gertrude Christina Thomas was presented for the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by the Public Orator, Professor P.S. Walters. The programme provides extensive lists of graduates in Commerce, Economics, Accountancy, Business Science and Law, including recipients of distinctions in disciplines such as Accounting, Economics, Industrial Psychology, Information Systems and Management. It also documents postgraduate qualifications and research degrees, with doctoral research addressing subjects including entrepreneurial ethics in South Africa, international trade agreements and their implications for developing economies, judicial review and administrative justice in democratic South Africa, socio-economic rights under the 1996 Constitution, social security and welfare initiatives in the Eastern Cape, and the powers of the Swazi monarch under Swazi law and custom. These research topics offer insight into scholarly engagement with economic development, governance, legal reform, social justice and the challenges facing post-apartheid South Africa and the wider region at the beginning of the twenty-first century. The programme further records the Vice-Chancellor’s awards for distinguished senior research, research and teaching, recognising Professor Christopher David McQuaid, Dr Warwick Hugo Hans Sauer, Professor Peter Graham Clayton and Dr Louise Vincent. Extensive lists of academic honours and colours reflect student achievement across the university, while the awards of scholarships, bursaries and prizes document institutional and external support for undergraduate and postgraduate study. Named awards include the Andrew Mellon Foundation Postgraduate Scholarships, Henderson Postgraduate Scholarships, Rhodes University Postgraduate Scholarships, the Rhodes Foundation Scholarship for the most outstanding graduate, and numerous subject-specific awards in law, history, science, commerce and the humanities. The final pages preserve the university’s ceremonial songs, The Purple and the White and Gaudeamus Igitur, reflecting its academic traditions and institutional identity. As a primary institutional record, this programme is a valuable resource for Rhodes University’s history, verification of historical qualifications, biographical and genealogical research, and the study of higher education, academic achievement and research priorities in South Africa in 2003.
