Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 7 April 2006, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twenty-page programme documents the conferral of diplomas and undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across the university’s faculties, alongside academic distinctions, doctoral research, academic honours, academic colours and half-colours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor Professor G.J. Gerwel, with Professor D.R. Woods serving as Vice-Chancellor. Dr Peter Magubane addressed the congregation and received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, in recognition of his contribution to South African photography and documentary history. The programme also recognises academic excellence through the Vice-Chancellor’s awards: Professor Sarah Elizabeth Radloff received the Distinguished Senior Research Medal; Professor Michael Trevor Davies-Coleman received the Senior Distinguished Teaching Medal; Professor Martin Patrick Hill received the Distinguished Research Medal; and Professor Peter Vale received the Vice-Chancellor’s Book Prize. The programme provides a detailed record of graduates in the Humanities, including Social Work, Social Science, Fine Art, Music, Journalism and Media Studies, as well as postgraduate qualifications and research degrees. The postgraduate research titles offer insight into the university’s scholarly activities in 2006, addressing subjects such as political transformation, democracy, regional integration, land reform, rural development, journalism and broadcasting, media representation, psychology, philosophy, environmental science, geography, history and the arts. Several studies focus on Southern Africa and the wider African continent, including research on post-apartheid South Africa, the Eastern Cape, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Zambia, Nigeria, Uganda and Botswana. Topics include land tenure and agricultural productivity, the effects of land reform on rural communities, public broadcasting and editorial independence, regional political relations, environmental livelihoods, and the social and psychological consequences of trauma and inequality. The programme also documents academic achievement through extensive lists of graduates awarded distinctions, academic honours, colours and half-colours, alongside numerous scholarships, bursaries and prizes. As a primary institutional record, this document provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, research priorities, graduate achievements and traditions of academic recognition in 2006. It is a useful resource for institutional history, biographical and genealogical research, verification of historical qualifications, and the study of higher education and scholarly research in South Africa during the post-apartheid period.
