Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 11 April 2003, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The eighteen-page programme documents the conferral of qualifications across the university’s faculties, with extensive listings of graduates, academic distinctions, postgraduate research, academic honours, academic colours and half-colours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor Professor G.J. Gerwel, with Professor D.R. Woods serving as Vice-Chancellor. Professor Stuart John Saunders addressed the congregation and received the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. The programme also recognises outstanding contributions to teaching and research through the Vice-Chancellor’s awards: Professor Peter Graham Clayton and Dr Louise Vincent received the Distinguished Teaching Award; Dr Warwick Hugo Hans Sauer received the Distinguished Research Award; and Professor Christopher David McQuaid received the Distinguished Senior Research Award. The Faculty of Science receives substantial attention in the programme, including undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in fields such as chemistry, computer science, information systems, geology, biotechnology, microbiology, environmental science, zoology, ichthyology and fisheries science, botany, and mathematical statistics. The master’s and doctoral research titles document the university’s research activity in 2003, with topics addressing marine and freshwater ecology, biodiversity, biological pest control, environmental biotechnology, natural products, geological processes, economic development, information systems and computer networks. Several studies have a particular regional focus, including research on the Eastern Cape’s marine and terrestrial environments, abalone farming, invasive plant species, and fisheries and coastal ecosystems. The programme also records the university’s support for academic achievement through numerous scholarships and bursaries, including Andrew Mellon Foundation postgraduate scholarships, Henderson Postgraduate Scholarships, Rhodes University postgraduate scholarships, and awards recognising outstanding graduates. As a primary institutional record, this programme provides valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, research priorities, graduate achievements and traditions of academic recognition at the beginning of the twenty-first century. It is a useful resource for institutional history, biographical and genealogical research, the verification of historical qualifications, and the study of higher education and scientific research in South Africa in 2003.
