Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, 6 April 2002, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The thirteen-page programme documents qualifications conferred by the Faculties of Commerce and Law, including bachelor’s degrees, honours qualifications, postgraduate diplomas and master’s degrees. The Faculty of Commerce listings include degrees in Commerce, Economics, Accountancy and Business Science, alongside postgraduate qualifications in Enterprise Management and Accountancy. The programme records postgraduate research on leadership, internal quality and customer satisfaction in a South African motor vehicle organisation; problems experienced by virtual teams during requirements elicitation; valuation methods for intellectual capital in South African companies; and the design, evaluation and comparison of evolutionary and reinforcement learning models. The Faculty of Law section includes Bachelor of Laws and Master of Laws qualifications, with the latter covering research into the legal effect of a coup d’état on traditional constitutional concepts. The ceremony also recognises institutional excellence through the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Awards, presented to Professors Thomas Hecht and Perry Theodore Kaye, the Distinguished Research Award to Professor Lirieka Meintjes-van der Walt, and the Distinguished Teaching Award to Professor Matthew Robert Michael Lester. Extensive listings of academic honours, academic colours and half-colours, scholarships, bursaries and subject-specific prizes document student achievement and institutional support for academic excellence. The programme further preserves the university’s ceremonial traditions through its order of proceedings and the texts of the university songs, The Purple and the White and Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional record, this programme provides evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, graduate achievements, postgraduate research and traditions of recognition in 2002. It supports historical and biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing scholarly and professional careers, and documenting the university’s contribution to higher education in South Africa.
