Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 5 April 2002, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme documents qualifications awarded across the Faculties of Education and Humanities, including certificates, diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, honours qualifications, master’s degrees and doctoral awards. It identifies the university’s leadership, including Chancellor G.J. Gerwel and Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Randall James Bush, who addressed the congregation. Graduate listings include qualifications in education, fine art, music, journalism, theology and media studies, with postgraduate research addressing educational leadership in Namibia, inclusive education, environmental education, school management, online journalism, media commercialisation and broadcasting in Uganda and Botswana. The programme recognises research excellence through the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Award, presented to Professors Thomas Hecht and Perry Theodore Kaye, the Distinguished Research Award to Professor Lirieka Meintjes-van der Walt, and the Distinguished Teaching Award to Professor Matthew Robert Michael Lester. Extensive lists of academic honours, colours and half-colours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes document student achievement and institutional support for education and research. As a primary institutional record, the programme preserves evidence of Rhodes University’s academic leadership, graduate achievements, postgraduate research and traditions of academic recognition in 2002. It supports biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing scholarly careers, and documenting the university’s institutional history and contribution to higher education in South Africa.
