Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 5 April 2002, at 14:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme documents diplomas and undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral degrees, particularly in the Faculties of Science and Pharmacy. It identifies university leadership, including Chancellor G.J. Gerwel and Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, and records an address by Dr George Duncan Nicolson, who received the Doctor of Science degree. Thomas Hecht and Perry Theodore Kaye received the Vice-Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Research (senior). Graduates represented disciplines including Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Geology, Environmental Science, Marine Biology, Fisheries Science and Ergonomics. Postgraduate research covered environmental remediation, wastewater treatment, biodiversity, coastal ecology, fisheries management, computer networks and geographic information systems, with several studies focused on the Eastern Cape and South African coastal environments. Doctoral research included precious-metal recovery, pollutant treatment, freshwater ecology, coastal vegetation, atmospheric dynamics and chemical catalysis. The programme also records teaching and research awards, academic honours, colours, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. As a primary institutional record, it preserves evidence of Rhodes University’s graduates, scientific research priorities and academic recognition in 2002, supporting biographical research, qualification verification and the study of the university’s institutional history and the development of scientific scholarship in South Africa.
