Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 5 April 2002, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme documents undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications in the Faculty of Humanities, including academic distinctions, research achievements, university awards, scholarships, bursaries and prizes. It identifies the university’s leadership, including Chancellor G.J. Gerwel and Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, and records an address by Anthony Clark. The graduate listings cover disciplines such as English, History, Philosophy, Psychology, Drama, Music, Journalism and Media Studies, Politics, Anthropology, Linguistics, Economics and International Studies. Postgraduate research addresses South African civil society, traditional leadership in post-1996 South Africa, political propaganda and the Rwandan genocide, psychological assessment and therapy, English language teaching, gender and identity, and democratic governance. Doctoral research includes studies of non-governmental organisations and rural development in Kenya, and the political ecology of wildlife conservation in Kenya between 1895 and 1975. The programme also records the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Award, Distinguished Research Award and Distinguished Teaching Award, alongside extensive lists of academic honours, colours and half-colours. Its scholarship and prize listings document institutional support for academic achievement across disciplines. As a primary institutional record, the programme preserves evidence of Rhodes University’s graduates, research priorities, academic recognition and ceremonial traditions in 2002. It supports biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing postgraduate scholarship, and documenting the university’s institutional history and the development of higher education in South Africa.
