Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 6 April 2001, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme documents qualifications awarded across the Faculties of Law, Commerce and Education, including undergraduate, honours, postgraduate diploma, master’s and doctoral degrees. It identifies the university’s leadership, including Chancellor G.J. Gerwel and Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, and records the conferral of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on Justice Foole Bam and Thelma Muriel Henderson. The postgraduate research listings include studies of letters of credit and consumer protection under South African law, manufacturing performance in the Eastern Cape automotive industry, monetary control in South Africa, mathematics education, environmental sustainability, educational leadership and teacher development. Doctoral research in Education addresses cooperative learning in secondary-school Biology, multicultural approaches in South African textbooks and collaborative teacher professional development. The programme also recognises academic excellence through the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Award to Professor J.R. Duncan, the Distinguished Research Award to Dr N.P. Barker, and Distinguished Teaching Awards to Professors G.E. Gordon and S. Daya. Extensive listings of academic honours, colours, scholarships, bursaries and subject-specific prizes document student achievement and institutional support for higher education. The programme preserves the order of proceedings and the university’s ceremonial traditions, including the graduation song Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional record, it provides evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, research priorities, graduate achievements and traditions of recognition in 2001. It supports biographical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing postgraduate scholarship, and documenting the history of higher education and research in South Africa.
