Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 6 April 2001, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme documents qualifications awarded across the Faculties of Pharmacy, Humanities and Science, including undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral degrees. It records the university’s leadership, academic awards and distinctions, and lists graduates alongside postgraduate research titles. Pharmacy research addresses health literacy in South Africa and the formulation of repeat-action medication tablets. Humanities research covers clinical psychology, rural development in the former Ciskei, social work, spirituality, religious history and pastoral theology. Science research spans Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geology, Microbiology, Zoology, Ichthyology and Fisheries Science, Environmental Biotechnology and Mathematical Statistics, with topics including Eastern Cape rangeland management, Karoo groundwater resources, marine ecology, fisheries, biodiversity and chemical synthesis. The programme records the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Award to Professor J. R. Duncan, the Distinguished Research Award to Dr N. P. Barker, and Distinguished Teaching Awards to Professor G. E. Gordon and Professor S. Daya. Extensive listings of scholarships, bursaries, prizes, academic honours, colours and half-colours document institutional support for research and student achievement. The programme also preserves university leadership and governance details, the order of proceedings, the university hymn Vis Virtus Veritas, and the graduation song Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional record, it provides evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities, research priorities, graduate achievements and traditions of recognition in 2001. It supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and distinctions, tracing scholarly careers, and documenting the history of higher education and research in South Africa.
