Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Saturday, 8 April 2000, at 10:30 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme outlines the order of proceedings, identifies university leadership and faculty deans, and lists graduates receiving diplomas and degrees across the Faculties of Law, Commerce and Education. It records postgraduate qualifications and research topics addressing South African law, organisational leadership, information systems, educational management, environmental education, sustainable fisheries, indigenous plant use and science education in Lesotho. The ceremony includes the award of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Medal to Bridget Jennifer Clark and the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws on Neville Wallace Zietsman. Extensive lists of scholarships, bursaries, prizes and academic colours document student achievement and institutional recognition. The programme also explains the role and membership of the University Convocation and preserves the university’s ceremonial songs, including Gaudeamus Igitur and Vis Virtus Veritas. As a primary institutional record, this document supports biographical and genealogical research, verification of qualifications and awards, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic history, research interests and traditions at the turn of the millennium.
