Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University Graduation Ceremony held on Friday, 7 April 2000, at 18:00 at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme documents degrees awarded across the university’s faculties, identifies university leadership and records honorary recognition, including a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, awarded to Robin David Hamilton. It also recognises research excellence through the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Senior Research Medal, awarded to Howard Randolph Hepburn, and the Distinguished Research Medal, awarded to Pierre William Froneman. Graduate listings and postgraduate research topics span the humanities, social sciences, commerce, pharmacy, information systems and natural sciences, addressing subjects such as Eastern Cape history and communities, amaXhosa spirituality, environmental management, biodiversity, marine science, fisheries, genetics and information technology. Extensive lists of scholarships, bursaries, prizes and academic colours document student achievement and institutional recognition. The programme also describes the University Convocation’s governance role and membership and preserves the traditional academic songs Gaudeamus Igitur and The Purple and the White. As a primary institutional record, it supports biographical and genealogical research, qualification verification, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic history, research priorities and scholarship traditions in 2000.
