Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 8 May 1998, at City Hall in East London. The programme identifies university leadership, faculty deans and the Registrar, and records an address by Dr Ali Bacher, Managing Director of the United Cricket Board of South Africa, who received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa. It lists graduates from the Faculties of Education, Humanities, Science, Commerce and Law, documenting diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, academic distinctions and research achievements. Notable postgraduate research includes studies on the experiences of children giving evidence in the legal system, psychotherapy, gender relations in East London between 1870 and 1914, academic literacy at Rhodes University, barrier-free tourism for people with physical disabilities in the Eastern Cape, and ethical questions surrounding tolerance in South Africa. Scientific research addresses marine biology, zoology, geology and the ecology of shrimp populations in the Southern Ocean. The programme also documents scholarships, bursaries, academic prizes and awards, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Medal awarded to Sandra Karin Sparrius, as well as recipients of academic honours, colours and half-colours. Its final pages explain the statutory role of University Convocation in institutional governance and preserve the university song Gaudeamus Igitur in Latin and English. As a primary institutional source, the programme supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications, tracing academic careers and identifying historical research topics, while documenting Rhodes University’s academic priorities, traditions and institutional relationships in 1998.
