Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 18 April 1998, at 10.30 a.m. at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The ten-page programme identifies university leadership, faculty deans and the Registrar, and records an address by Dr Alexander Lionel Boraine, Deputy Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, who received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa. Graduates are listed across the Faculties of Pharmacy, Humanities, Science and other disciplines, with qualifications ranging from undergraduate degrees to honours, master’s degrees and doctorates. Postgraduate research covers pharmaceutical sciences, theology, anthropology, psychology, computer science, chemistry, marine biology, fisheries science, geology and environmental management. Notable research includes the management of natural resources in a rural settlement in the Peddie district, risk-taking behaviour among students at a Rhini high school, the assessment of South Africa’s east coast linefishery, the ecology of Eastern Cape temporary rivers, and the conservation of the elephant-impacted flora of Addo Elephant National Park. The programme also documents extensive scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award to S.K. Sparrius and Research Award to E.A. Pakhomov, alongside awards supporting Eastern Cape history, environmental studies, fisheries science, law, pharmacy, the humanities and the sciences. Further sections list recipients of academic honours, colours and half-colours and explain the role of University Convocation in institutional governance. The programme concludes with the traditional university song Gaudeamus Igitur in Latin and English. As a primary institutional source, this document supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications, tracing academic careers and identifying historical research topics, while documenting Rhodes University’s academic priorities, scholarship traditions and ceremonial practices in 1998.
