Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 17 April 1998, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The programme outlines the ceremonial proceedings, identifies university leadership and faculty deans, and records an address by Dr Bonisile John Kani, actor, playwright and Managing Trustee of the Market Theatre Laboratory, who received an honorary Doctor of Literature degree honoris causa. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Law, Commerce, Education and other disciplines, documenting qualifications, distinctions and academic achievements. Notable postgraduate research includes Sharon Lewis’s Master of Laws thesis on juvenile diversion and keeping children out of prison, Adrian Melvin Ristow’s study of transformational leadership in South African cricket administration, and education research addressing outcomes-based learning, second-language teaching, environmental training needs in Eastern Cape industries, mathematics education and graphicacy in primary schools. The programme also preserves extensive lists of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, including the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award to S.K. Sparrius and Distinguished Research Award to E.A. Pakhomov. Further sections record academic honours, colours and half-colours and explain the statutory role of University Convocation in institutional governance. The document concludes with the university song Gaudeamus Igitur in Latin and English. As a primary institutional source, this programme supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications, tracing academic careers and identifying historical research topics, while documenting Rhodes University’s academic priorities, scholarship traditions and ceremonial practices in 1998.
