Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 9 May 1997, at 6.00 p.m. at the City Hall in East London. The eleven-page programme identifies the university’s senior leadership, including Chancellor Gavin Walter Hamilton Reily, Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, Pro-Vice-Chancellor M.A.H. Smout, Registrar S. Fourie, and the deans of the faculties, as well as T.A. Marsh, Director of the East London Campus. The ceremony was addressed by Mr Justice Arthur Chaskalson, President of the Constitutional Court of South Africa, who was also presented with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree honoris causa. The programme documents the presentation of qualifications across the Faculties of Education, Social Science, Commerce, Science and Arts, including diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, honours degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates. The extensive Education section lists recipients of diplomas in junior and senior primary teacher education, higher diplomas in education, and undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications. Research topics include Susan Patricia Dowding’s master’s study of principal succession and high school staff experiences; Robert James Taylor’s doctoral research on environmental education resource development in a risk society; and Razeena Wagiet’s doctoral study of environmental education as a strategy for primary teacher education. The Faculty of Social Science section records research on the operation and services of isiXhosa traditional medicine shops in the Eastern Cape and the role of drinking fathers in the later contradictions and choices of married women. Commerce research includes Duncan Hodge’s doctoral thesis on exchange-rate theories and the methodology of economics, while the Science section documents Frank Courteney Tanser’s master’s research using remote sensing and geographical information systems to identify landscape degradation patterns in the Great Fish River valley. The Faculty of Arts section includes postgraduate research on international labour discourse against racism in South Africa between 1915 and 1919, South Africa’s relationship with the European Union, visual literacy among Black primary-school children, the African National Congress’s foreign policy between 1989 and 1994, Buddhist meditation practices, and perspectives on school punishment. Etienne Louis Nel’s doctoral research examines regional and local economic development strategies in the Eastern Cape and guidelines for future development. The programme also preserves the recipients of scholarships, bursaries and prizes recognising academic achievement in law, accounting, auditing, information systems, education, commerce and the humanities. Robert McIntyre received several commerce-related awards, including recognition for accounting, management accounting and taxation, while Cecilia Mazibuko received the Director’s Book Prize for the Diploma in Education. The academic colours section records recipients of full and half colours, and the Convocation section explains the statutory role of graduates and university staff in discussing institutional affairs and electing representatives to Council. The concluding pages reproduce the university anthem Vis Virtus Veritas and Gaudeamus Igitur in Latin and English, preserving the ceremonial traditions of Rhodes University. As a primary institutional source, this programme supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications, the tracing of academic careers and the study of postgraduate research. It also documents the history of the East London Campus, teacher education, environmental studies, regional development and the university’s academic and ceremonial life in 1997.
