Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 19 April 1997, at 10.30 a.m. at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The nineteen-page programme records the university’s senior leadership, including Chancellor Gavin Walter Hamilton Reily, Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, Pro-Vice-Chancellor M.A.H. Smout, Chairman of Council Justice R.J.W. Jones, President of Convocation Justice N.W. Zietsman, the Registrar S. Fourie, and the deans of the faculties. The ceremony was addressed by Professor Kader Asmal, then Minister for Water Affairs and Forestry, and included the presentation of diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, honours degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates. Honorary degrees were to be conferred on Professor Kader Asmal, Doctor of Laws honoris causa, and Conrad Barend Strauss, Doctor of Economics honoris causa. The programme also records the joint award of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award to Professor Paul Walters and Dr Hendrik van der Mescht. The Faculty of Law section lists graduates of the Bachelor of Laws degree, including recipients of distinctions such as Catherine Lynne Claire Pardini, Lawrence Ivan Schafer and Graham Brian Glover. The Faculty of Commerce section documents graduates in commerce and economics, postgraduate diplomas in accountancy and enterprise management, and honours degrees in accounting, economics, computer science and information systems. The Faculty of Education section records qualifications in primary education, postgraduate teacher education and the Bachelor of Education, alongside master’s and doctoral research. The postgraduate research listed in the programme reflects significant educational and social concerns of the period. Examples include Lesley Foster’s research on empowering girls to speak in a multicultural context; Sithembele Marawu’s study of English/Xhosa code-switching in an English-medium classroom; Maria Pauline Mbengashe’s investigation of environmental knowledge and perceptions among political leaders in the Eastern Cape; and Robert Bryan O’Donaghue’s doctoral research into the developing social processes of environmental education in eastern southern Africa. Hendrik van der Mescht’s doctoral thesis examined educational leaders’ perceptions of themselves, their followers and their organisational contexts. The programme’s scholarship and prize lists provide a detailed record of academic recognition across the university. Awards include the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History, the Ian Mackenzie Scholarship for Environmental Studies, the Raymond Pullen Memorial Scholarships for Fine Art, Music and Drama, and the B.A. Putterill Prize for master’s study in ecology and conservation in the Eastern Cape. Other awards recognise achievement in law, journalism, chemistry, physics, geology, pharmacy, fisheries science, accounting, information systems, music and the humanities. The Rhodes Foundation Scholarship for the most outstanding graduate was awarded to Grant Etienne Olwage, while the programme records recipients of academic colours, honours and half-colours. Its final pages explain the statutory role of University Convocation, including its responsibility to discuss university affairs, convey resolutions to Council and Senate, and elect three members to the University Council. The programme also preserves the university’s Latin anthem, Vis Virtus Veritas, and the traditional graduation song, Gaudeamus Igitur, in Latin and English. As a primary institutional source, this programme is valuable for genealogical and biographical research, verification of qualifications, tracing academic careers, identifying postgraduate research topics and documenting the history of Rhodes University. It also provides evidence of the university’s academic priorities, scholarship traditions, educational research and engagement with Eastern Cape history and environmental issues in 1997
