Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 18 April 1997, at 8.15 p.m. at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twenty-one-page programme records the university’s senior leadership, including Chancellor Gavin Walter Hamilton Reily, Vice-Chancellor D.R. Woods, Pro-Vice-Chancellor M.A.H. Smout, the Chairman of Council, the President of Convocation and the deans of the faculties. The ceremony was addressed by the Archbishop of Cape Town, the Most Reverend Winston Njongonkulu Ndungane, and included the presentation of candidates for diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, honours degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates. The programme also records the award of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Award to Dr Michael T. Davies-Coleman for his work in marine natural products chemistry, postgraduate research leadership and international research collaboration. Honorary degrees were to be conferred on Derek Scott Henderson, Doctor of Laws honoris causa, and Winston Njongonkulu Ndungane, Doctor of Divinity honoris causa. The graduate lists span the Faculties of Pharmacy, Social Science, Science and other academic disciplines represented in the programme, documenting the names and qualifications of graduates, distinctions and postgraduate research. The Faculty of Pharmacy section includes research on pharmaceutical photostability, capillary electrophoresis, amoxycillin suppositories and biologically active natural products from South African marine invertebrates. The Faculty of Science section documents extensive research across chemistry, computer science, zoology, botany, microbiology, geography, geology, fisheries science and environmental studies. Examples include research on the ecology of invasive species, marine fish breeding, land degradation and land-use change in the former Ciskei, rural water supply, remote sensing of savanna ecosystems, and the bioremediation of industrial wastewater. These titles provide a valuable record of the university’s research interests and the scientific questions being investigated in the late 1990s. The programme also contains extensive lists of scholarships, bursaries, medals and academic prizes, including awards for research, teaching, environmental studies, Eastern Cape history, fisheries science, conservation, law, journalism, music and the humanities. Its final pages list recipients of academic colours and half-colours and explain the statutory role of University Convocation, including its responsibility to discuss university affairs and elect three members to the University Council. The concluding pages reproduce the university song Gaudeamus Igitur in Latin and English, preserving an important element of the institution’s ceremonial traditions. As a primary institutional source, this programme is valuable for genealogical and biographical research, verification of graduate qualifications, tracing academic careers and identifying historical research topics. It also documents Rhodes University’s leadership, scholarship programmes, research priorities and institutional traditions in 1997.
