Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 18 April 1997, at 10.30 a.m. at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The nineteen-page programme identifies the university’s Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Council leadership, faculty deans and Registrar, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including an address by South African satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys and the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree on him. It also records the presentation of the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award, jointly awarded to Professor Paul S. Walters and Mr Hendrik van der Mescht. Extensive graduate lists document qualifications across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Commerce, Education, Law, Social Science and Pharmacy, including undergraduate degrees, honours qualifications, postgraduate diplomas, master’s degrees and doctorates. The postgraduate research titles provide insight into the university’s scholarly priorities and the social, cultural and political concerns of the period. Topics include regional cooperation in Southern Africa, language teaching in higher education, drama education, the representation of women in J.M. Coetzee’s novels, medical interpreting in the Eastern Cape, traditional healing and mental healthcare, HIV-related knowledge and behaviour, racial residential segregation in King William’s Town between 1826 and 1991, and urban agriculture in Eastern Cape communities. Doctoral research in the Faculty of Arts addresses cross-cultural experiences of mental illness, the South African short story in English, psychotherapy and transpersonal phenomena, and urban agriculture. The programme also contains extensive lists of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded across the humanities, sciences, commerce, law, pharmacy, music and the visual arts, as well as recipients of academic honours and colours. Its concluding pages reproduce the university songs The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur and explain the statutory role of University Convocation in institutional governance. As a primary institutional source, this programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles, academic awards and ceremonial traditions, supporting genealogical and biographical research while documenting Rhodes University’s academic history, research interests and institutional life in 1997.
