Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University East London graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 13 May 1995, at 11.00 a.m. in the Guild Theatre in East London. The eight-page programme identifies university officeholders, faculty deans and S. Fourie as Director of the East London Division. It outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including an address by Allan Gray, Executive Chairman of Orbis Investment Advisory Ltd in London and member of the Rhodes University Board of Governors, and the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Allan William Buchanan Gray. Graduates are listed across the Faculties of Education, Arts, Commerce, Social Science and Science, with qualifications including higher diplomas in education, undergraduate and honours degrees, and doctoral degrees. The education section documents qualifications for junior and senior primary school teachers and a Master of Education thesis examining secondary school geography teachers’ perceptions of environmental education, with particular reference to Natal Education Department teachers. Science research includes doctoral theses on physiological signal transduction in the green alga Dunaliella salina and the processes contributing to stress-induced beta-carotene accumulation in the same organism. Commerce graduates are recognised in accounting, commercial law, economics, information systems and psychology, while Social Science honours qualifications include social work. The programme also lists scholarships, bursaries and prizes recognising achievement in commerce, accounting, auditing, management accounting, information systems and economics, alongside academic half-colours awarded to two students. Its concluding pages explain the role of University Convocation in institutional governance and reproduce the university songs The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional source, this programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles, academic awards and ceremonial traditions, supporting genealogical and biographical research and documenting Rhodes University’s East London Division and higher education in the Eastern Cape in 1995.
