Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 22 April 1995, at 10.30 a.m. in the University Great Hall in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, faculty deans and the Registrar, outlines the ceremonial proceedings, and records the presentation of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree to Alexander McGregor. It lists graduates in the Faculty of Arts, including qualifications in music, humanities, journalism, human movement studies and fine art, with distinctions awarded in disciplines such as philosophy, drama, geography, politics, psychology, linguistics and music. The programme also documents an extensive range of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes supporting achievement in the humanities, sciences, law, pharmacy, commerce and the arts. Notable awards include the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History, the Ian Mackenzie Scholarship for Environmental Studies, the B.A. Putterill Prize for master’s research in ecology and conservation in the Eastern Cape, and the Raymond Pullen Memorial Scholarships for fine art, music and drama. Pages 10–11 list recipients of academic honours, colours and half-colours, while page 11 explains the role of University Convocation in discussing institutional matters and electing representatives to Council. The final pages reproduce the university songs The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur, preserving the institution’s ceremonial traditions. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, academic distinctions and award recipients, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic history, student achievements and scholarship opportunities in 1995.
