Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 21 April 1995, at 8.15 p.m. in the University Great Hall in Grahamstown. It records the university’s academic leadership at the time, including Chancellor Gavin Walter Hamilton Reily, Vice-Chancellor Dr Derek Scott Henderson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor M.A.H. Smout, faculty deans and Registrar Dr K.S. Hunt. The programme outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including the opening hymn Vis Virtus Veritas, a scripture reading and prayer by the Acting Dean of Divinity, an address by the Vice-Chancellor, and the presentation of diplomas and degrees across the faculties. It also records the presentation of Alastair James Kerr for the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa). The graduate lists document qualifications awarded in Law, Pharmacy and Science, including undergraduate degrees, honours qualifications, master’s degrees and doctorates. Pages 4–9 provide particularly valuable detail on the range of academic research undertaken at Rhodes in 1995, with postgraduate thesis titles covering alternative dispute resolution and the interests of children, pharmaceutical chemistry, biotechnology, coastal dune management, environmental planning, marine biology, computer science, geology, zoology, microbiology and atmospheric physics. The Science faculty’s doctoral research includes studies of limpets, chemical compounds, ionospheric processes, biological pest control, mussel population dynamics and insect interactions with the Cape fig. Pages 9–12 document scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded to students and staff, reflecting support for research and achievement across the humanities, sciences, law, pharmacy, accounting, music, drama and the visual arts. Pages 12–13 list recipients of academic colours, honours and half-colours. The programme also provides an institutional account of Convocation on page 14, explaining its role in university governance and its representation on Council. As a primary historical source, the document is valuable for genealogical and biographical research, verifying graduates’ names and qualifications, identifying postgraduate research topics and tracing academic recognition at Rhodes University during South Africa’s transition in the mid-1990s. It also preserves evidence of the university’s leadership, academic structures, research priorities and student achievements at that time.
