Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 21 April 1995, at 10.30 a.m. in the University Great Hall in Grahamstown. The twenty-page programme documents the university’s academic leadership, including the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Council and Convocation representatives, faculty deans and Registrar. It outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including an address by Mrs Nosimo Balindlela, Member of the Executive Council for Education and Culture in the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, the presentation of diplomas and degrees, and the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree on Theocritus Simon Ndziweni Gqubule. The programme records graduates across the Faculties of Education, Divinity and Arts, including qualifications in teacher education, theology, journalism, international studies, languages, history, psychology, geography, drama, fine art and music. Pages 4–6 list education graduates and postgraduate research addressing teacher development, educational leadership, environmental education, language teaching, curriculum effectiveness and the use of geography textbooks in schools. Pages 8–9 document Master of Arts research on South African political transformation, foreign policy, urban settlement patterns, language education, environmental knowledge, literary studies and historical developments, alongside doctoral research in music, labour history, human movement studies and psychotherapy. The programme also preserves an extensive record of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded in 1995, including distinctions in the humanities and sciences, environmental studies, fisheries science, fine art, music, drama, law, pharmacy and accounting. As a primary institutional source, this document supports historical, biographical and genealogical research through its detailed lists of graduates, qualifications, research titles and academic awards. It also provides evidence of Rhodes University’s academic priorities, teaching programmes and research interests during South Africa’s transition to democracy in the mid-1990s.
