Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Thursday, 20 April 1995, at 8.15 p.m. in the University Great Hall in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme identifies university officeholders and faculty deans, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records an address by the Right Reverend Anthony Mdletshe, Bishop Suffragan of Grahamstown. It also documents the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Social Science degree on Omar Hajee Suliman Ebrahim. Graduates are listed across the Faculties of Social Science and Commerce, with qualifications ranging from undergraduate and honours degrees to master’s and doctoral degrees. Postgraduate research addresses clinical psychology, social work, industrial sociology, industrial psychology and economics. Notable studies examine the experiences of families in rural Transkei raising a child with an intellectual disability, the adjustment and needs of retired residents in Port Alfred, prosocial behaviour among South African students, the psychological profile of small-business entrepreneurs, and strike action in South Africa between 1950 and 1990. The programme also documents extensive scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, including awards for Eastern Cape history, environmental studies, fisheries science, the humanities, fine art, music, drama, law, pharmacy and the sciences. Pages 10–11 list academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded to students, while the final pages reproduce the university songs The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur and explain the role of Convocation in university governance. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic distinctions, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic history and scholarly activities in 1995.
