Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University East London graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 14 May 1994, at the Guild Theatre in East London. The seven-page programme identifies university officeholders and faculty deans, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records an address by Mluleki Editor George, National President of the National Sports Congress and Senior Vice-President of the South African Rugby Football Union. It also documents the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Science degree on Auriol Ursula Batten. Graduates are listed across the Faculties of Social Science, Education, Arts, Divinity and Commerce, with qualifications ranging from undergraduate degrees and professional diplomas to honours, master’s and doctoral degrees. Postgraduate research addresses social work, educational leadership, geographical education, psychology, anthropology, theology and business management. Notable studies examine teaching materials for geographical hazards, the development of informal settlements through the historical anthropology of Zulu land tenure, therapeutic dialogue and self-disclosure, and methods for predicting corporate failure in South Africa. The programme also records scholarships, bursaries, prizes and academic colours, recognising achievement in commercial law, auditing, accounting, information systems and management. Its final pages reproduce the university songs The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur and describe the role of Convocation in university governance, including its representation on the University Council. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic distinctions, supporting genealogical and biographical research and documenting Rhodes University's East London Division, its academic activities and higher education in the Eastern Cape in 1994.
