Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 9 April 1994, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor Gavin Walter Hamilton Reily, with D.S. Henderson as Vice-Chancellor. The programme identifies Michael O’Dowd, Executive Director of the Anglo-American Corporation of South Africa Limited, as the guest speaker, and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on him in recognition of his contribution to public and professional life. The programme lists graduates across the Faculties of Law, Education, Commerce and Divinity, alongside qualifications and distinctions awarded in a broad range of disciplines. The postgraduate research recorded offers a valuable snapshot of academic priorities in South Africa during the early 1990s. Education research is particularly prominent, with studies examining environmental education, English as a second language, educational computing, mathematics teaching, curriculum development, school management, guidance and counselling, and educational practices in the Ciskei and Bophuthatswana. Several projects explore the potential of computers and databases to support teaching and learning, while others investigate multilingual education, teacher development and the relationship between education and environmental conservation. The Faculty of Commerce records research on productivity growth in South African manufacturing and attitudes towards affirmative action in the business environment, with particular attention to race and gender. Divinity research includes studies of liberation theology, Black preaching, contemporary religious experience and biblical interpretation. The programme also documents an extensive range of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded across the humanities, sciences, commerce, law, education, pharmacy and the arts. Notable awards include the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History, the Ian Mackenzie Scholarship for Environmental Studies, the Raymond Pullen Memorial Scholarships for Fine Art, Music and Drama, and awards recognising achievement in ecology, conservation, geology, physics and microbiology. Academic distinctions and named scholarships provide additional evidence of the university's priorities and the achievements of individual students. As a primary institutional record, this programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, postgraduate thesis titles, academic distinctions and award recipients. It provides a useful resource for genealogical and biographical research, tracing academic careers, identifying historical research topics and investigating Rhodes University's institutional history during South Africa's transition towards democracy. It is particularly valuable for reconstructing the development of educational research, environmental studies and professional training in the Eastern Cape and surrounding regions.
