Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 8 April 1994, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The ceremony was presided over by Chancellor Gavin Walter Hamilton Reily, with D.S. Henderson serving as Vice-Chancellor. The programme records an address by Thabo Mbeki, then National Chairperson of the African National Congress, and the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Govan Archibald Mvuyelwa Mbeki, recognising his significance in South African public life during the country's transition towards democracy. The programme lists graduates across the Faculties of Social Science, Pharmacy and Science, including undergraduate and honours degrees, master's qualifications, and doctoral awards. The postgraduate research recorded offers a valuable snapshot of scholarly priorities in the early 1990s. Topics include gender and the division of labour in a rural black South African community; the ecology of Eastern Cape and southern African environments; freshwater ecosystem vulnerability to invasive aquatic species; the biology and management of marine resources; biotechnology; computer science; and mathematical physics. Other studies address pharmaceutical chemistry, microbiology, hydrology, geology and the development of expert systems. The programme also documents an extensive range of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, including awards for Eastern Cape history, environmental studies, fisheries science, ecology and conservation, humanities, law, pharmacy, and the fine arts. Academic colours and honours are listed separately, recording students recognised for academic achievement and contribution to university life. The closing pages explain the role of Convocation as a statutory body representing graduates and other eligible members of the university community, with responsibilities that include electing representatives to the University Council. As a primary institutional record, this programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles, academic distinctions and award recipients. It provides a useful resource for genealogical and biographical research, alumni enquiries, the reconstruction of academic careers, and the study of Rhodes University's institutional history during a pivotal period in South Africa's political and social transformation.
