Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 8 April 1994, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The nineteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the conferral of honorary Doctor of Literature degrees on Frederick Guy Butler and Thomas Rodney Hope Davenport. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Science, Law, Education, Commerce, Social Science, Divinity and Pharmacy, documenting diplomas, undergraduate degrees, honours, master’s degrees and doctorates. Postgraduate research reflects the university’s engagement with South African political transition, African languages and literature, cultural heritage, education, psychology, environmental studies and the arts. Notable studies examine the history of African communities in the Stutterheim district between 1870 and 1910, Xhosa written poetry and ideology, the political economy of Zambia, South Africa’s post-apartheid foreign policy, the legacy of black African historical novels, and the work of artist John Muafangejo. Other research addresses English-language development in Grahamstown, the position of Gcaleka women in Transkei, psychotherapy, rehabilitation and musicology. The programme also documents extensive scholarships, bursaries, medals and academic prizes, including awards for Eastern Cape history, environmental studies, ecology and conservation, fisheries science, humanities and the fine arts. Academic distinctions and scholarship recipients are recorded alongside institutional traditions, including the university anthem Vis Virtus Veritas and the closing song Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional source, this programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic achievements, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic history and the intellectual, cultural and political concerns of South African higher education in 1994.
