Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 16 April 1993, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the presentation of an honorary Doctor of Law degree to Nganani Enos John Mabuza. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Law, Education, Commerce and Divinity, documenting diplomas, undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, academic distinctions and specialisations. Postgraduate research addresses educational development, environmental education, South African history, labour law, language teaching and religious history. Notable studies examine geography teaching in the Umtata administrative area, environmental education in Grahamstown and Bophuthatswana, Ciskeian secondary-school pupils’ attitudes towards history, rural settlement education in Venda, and the position of domestic workers in law reform. The programme also documents extensive scholarships, bursaries, medals and academic prizes, including the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History and the B.A. Putterill Prize for ecological and conservation research in the Eastern Cape. It further records academic colours and half-colours and outlines the role of the University Convocation. The closing pages reproduce the university songs The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic achievements, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic history and the development of higher education in South Africa in 1993.
