Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 16 April 1993, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme identifies university officeholders and faculty deans, outlines the ceremonial proceedings, and records an address by Dr R. R. Arndt, President of the Foundation for Research Development. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Social Science and Pharmacy, including undergraduate, honours, master’s and doctoral qualifications, with distinctions and academic awards. Scientific research covers marine and freshwater ecology, fisheries science, biotechnology, microbiology, geology, chemistry, computer science and conservation. Notable postgraduate studies examine coastal dune ecology and management in the Eastern Cape, the biology of South African abalone along the Eastern Cape and Ciskei coast, fish populations in the Gamtoos River system, estuarine ecology, environmental seasonality on Tristan da Cunha and Gough Island, and the biological control of invasive Hakea sericea. Other research addresses diarrhoeal disease in the Eastern Cape, the geological formation of southern African mineral deposits, university academic support programmes, industrial social work and pharmaceutical safety and efficacy. The programme also documents extensive scholarships, bursaries, medals and prizes, including awards supporting Eastern Cape ecology and conservation research, alongside academic honours, colours and half-colours. Its final pages reproduce the university songs Gaudeamus Igitur and The Purple and White. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic distinctions, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic history, scientific research and contribution to South African higher education in 1993.
