Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 11 April 1992, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The eighteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and documents the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Peter Malcolm Searle, Chairman and Managing Director of Volkswagen of South Africa. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Law, Education and Commerce, recording qualifications ranging from professional diplomas and undergraduate degrees to master’s degrees and doctorates. Postgraduate research reflects contemporary priorities in education, economic development, business management and environmental awareness. Notable studies examine teacher professional development at the East London Teachers’ Centre, computer-assisted learning in South African schools, educational challenges in Transkei, environmental education in the Eastern Cape, the marketing of South African mohair between 1963 and 1989, electricity provision in Venda, and training programmes for Ciskeian retailers. The programme also records extensive scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, including the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History and the B.A. Putterill Prize for ecology and conservation research in the Eastern Cape. Pages 13–14 document academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded to students, while the final pages provide information about the University Convocation. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic distinctions, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic history and the development of higher education in South Africa in 1992.
