Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 10 April 1992, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The nineteen-page programme identifies university leadership and faculty deans, outlines the ceremonial proceedings, and records the conferral of an honorary Master of Education degree on Miriam Toba Dakile. The programme documents graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Divinity and other disciplines, listing diplomas, undergraduate degrees, honours qualifications, master’s degrees and doctorates, together with academic distinctions, scholarships, bursaries, prizes and academic colours. Postgraduate research reflects the university’s broad scholarly interests, including agricultural change in Shixini Location, Transkei; the mystical vision in the work of Ursula K. Le Guin; illness as a sociological phenomenon; dance and sexual politics; Namibia’s path to independence; constitutional developments concerning the Coloured Persons’ Representative Council; and the role of the World Bank in sub-Saharan African development. Scientific and environmental research includes the ecology and conservation of the Eastern Cape, fisheries science, microbiology, mineral exploration and related disciplines. The programme also records doctoral research on mysticism in literature and includes theological studies on biblical interpretation and women’s roles in the Church. Its extensive awards lists document institutional and external support for academic achievement, while the final pages reproduce the university songs, The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur, and provide information about the University Convocation. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic achievements, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic history and the intellectual and social concerns reflected in South African higher education in 1992.
