Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University East London graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 18 May 1991, at the Guild Theatre in East London. The nine-page programme identifies university officeholders and the Director of the East London Division, R.S. Suttner, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including an address by J. Kane-Berman, Executive Director of the Institute of Race Relations. The ceremony included the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree on Kathryn Freda Jagoe. Graduates are listed across the Faculties of Commerce and Education, with qualifications including the Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Education and a postgraduate Higher Diploma in Education for secondary school teachers. The programme also records doctoral research in History examining the development of East London under municipal control between 1873 and 1914, fisheries science research on the ecology and management of fishes in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, and economic research analysing government expenditure allocations to Black schooling in South Africa. Awards and prizes recognise academic achievement in accounting, auditing, management accounting, business information systems and commercial law, while the document also lists recipients of academic half-colours. The final pages reproduce the university songs The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur, and include an announcement inviting the public to observe a children’s art project organised by the Institute for Social and Individual Development in Africa (ISIDA), promoting artistic and social development in a non-racial context. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research topics, awards and details of university activities, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s East London Division and higher education in the Eastern Cape in 1991.
