Abstract
-
The digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 13 April 1991, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The eighteen-page programme documents the university’s leadership, ceremonial proceedings, graduates, postgraduate research, scholarships, bursaries, academic prizes and distinctions. The ceremony included the presentation of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree, honoris causa, to Leonard Walter Lanham. The programme lists qualifications across the Faculty of Arts, including diplomas in fine art and music, bachelor’s degrees in arts, journalism, media studies, fine art and music, postgraduate diplomas, honours degrees, master’s degrees and doctorates. The postgraduate research titles provide insight into the academic and social concerns of the period. Topics include the history of colonial administration under Sir Godfrey Lagden; Cape Nguni diviners and healing practices in Grahamstown townships; the role of the Xhosa oral poet in contemporary South African society; the South African Antarctic policy; the informal sector in the Eastern Cape; anti-apartheid documentaries; and land expropriation and labour extraction during the 1835 Cape frontier conflict. Research in the creative arts examines South African theatre, dance and movement therapy, outsider sculpture, art and photography, Russian art, and South African music education. The programme also records scholarships and awards supporting humanities, environmental studies, fisheries science, ecology and conservation in the Eastern Cape, alongside academic colours and honours awarded to students. The final pages explain the role of the university’s Convocation and reproduce the university song, The Purple and White. As a primary institutional source, this programme preserves the names of graduates, their qualifications, research titles and academic achievements, making it valuable for genealogical and biographical research, institutional history, and the study of Rhodes University’s academic and intellectual landscape in 1991.
