Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 12 April 1991, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The seventeen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and documents the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Science degree on scientist Dr Peter Humphry Greenwood. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Social Science and Pharmacy, among others, recording qualifications from undergraduate degrees and honours to master’s degrees and doctorates. Postgraduate research covers geology, fisheries science, marine ecology, computer science, chemistry, microbiology, psychology, social work and pharmaceutical sciences. Notable studies investigate mineral deposits in the Limpopo Belt and Namibia, gold mineralisation in Natal, fish ecology along the Tsitsikamma coast, the environmental and socioeconomic effects of saltbush cultivation in the Karoo, and the population dynamics of fish species off South Africa’s southeast coast. Social science research addresses immigrant adaptation in South Africa, stress and its meaning, and therapeutic self-insight, while doctoral research includes the treatment of tannery wastewater and pharmaceutical controlled-release formulations. The programme also records extensive scholarships, bursaries, academic prizes and colours, including the B.A. Putterill Prize for ecological and conservation research in the Eastern Cape. As a primary institutional source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic distinctions, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic history and research interests in South Africa in 1991.
