Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University East London graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 12 May 1990, at the Guild Theatre. The seven-page programme identifies university officeholders and the Director of the East London Division, R.S. Suttner, and outlines the ceremonial proceedings, including an address by scientist Professor Denis Ian Gough, who received an honorary Doctor of Science degree. Graduates are listed across the Faculties of Arts, Education and Commerce, with qualifications including the Bachelor of Arts, postgraduate diploma in journalism, Bachelor of Education, Certificate in Secretarial Practice and Bachelor of Commerce. Notable academic achievements include distinctions in sociology of education, curriculum theory, philosophy of education, comparative education, accounting and mercantile law. The programme also records academic colours awarded to Michael Robert Davidson and half-colours awarded to Elizabeth Ann Moore and Robert Anthony Wheals. Its final pages reproduce the university songs, The Purple and White and Gaudeamus Igitur, reflecting the ceremonial traditions of the institution. As a primary institutional source, the document preserves graduate names, qualifications, academic distinctions and award recipients, supporting biographical and genealogical research and documenting Rhodes University's East London Division and its contribution to higher education in the Eastern Cape in 1990.
