Abstract
The digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 7 April 1990, at 10 a.m. at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme identifies university leadership, sets out the order of proceedings, lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science and Pharmacy, and records scholarships, bursaries, prizes and academic colours. The ceremony included the presentation of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees to Gwendolen Truda Brock and Helen Suzman. The Science section documents qualifications in mathematics, computer science, microbiology, biochemistry, zoology, geology, botany, fisheries science and hydrology. Postgraduate research addresses rainfall-runoff modelling, southern African marine biology, fish taxonomy and life histories, coastal ecology, erosion and sedimentation, computer systems, radio astronomy and mineral exploration. The Commerce section records qualifications in accounting, business administration and economics, while Social Science includes social work, psychology and industrial sociology. Research topics include divorce adjustment, contraceptive use among Black men in Umtata, and marriage counselling in a Xhosa community. The Pharmacy section records undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, including research into melatonin, neurotransmission and bacterial serotypes. Pages 11–15 provide extensive lists of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, documenting the university's support for achievement across disciplines. The final page records academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded to students. As a primary institutional source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and award recipients, making it valuable for biographical and genealogical research, institutional history, and the study of South African higher education and scientific scholarship in 1990.
