Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 6 April 1990, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The thirteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Law, Education and Divinity, among others. It documents qualifications in music, journalism and media studies, librarianship, fine art, psychology, anthropology, law, teacher education and theology. Postgraduate research covers South African social history, education, psychology, literature, political studies and religious studies. Notable studies examine cooperative labour in Shixini, Transkei; unemployment in the South African context; household and gender relations; emergency law and judicial control of executive power; and the development of professional short-term reinsurance in South Africa between 1950 and 1985. Educational research addresses teaching and learning in Transkei schools, teacher development in farm schools, the history of South African schooling, and the educational experiences of gifted learners. Doctoral research includes the reading interests of English-speaking secondary school pupils, the French organ symphony, and the cultural context of European art song. The programme also records academic distinctions and explains the role and membership of the University Convocation on its final page. As a primary institutional source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications and research titles, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into Rhodes University, South African higher education and scholarly developments at the end of the 1980s.
