Abstract
The digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 8 April 1989, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, faculty deans, graduates, postgraduate researchers and recipients of academic colours. It documents the conferral of honorary degrees on Vernon Siegfried Forbes, who received a Doctor of Literature honoris causa, and Noel Arthur Francis Williams, who received a Doctor of Laws honoris causa. The programme lists qualifications across the Faculties of Arts, Law, Education and Divinity, including degrees and diplomas in journalism and media studies, fine art, music, librarianship, teacher education, theology and international studies. Its postgraduate section preserves the titles of master's and doctoral research spanning psychology, political studies, history, anthropology, Afrikaans and Dutch literature, geography, psychotherapy, education and musicology. Particularly significant for regional and social history are studies of the Bhaca and Qwathi peoples, the history of the Thembu and their relationship with the Cape between 1850 and 1900, migration from white-owned farms in the Eastern Cape to Grahamstown, and the educational work of the American Zulu Mission between 1835 and 1910. Other research addresses the historical adaptation of British political ideas in colonial society, educational practices in Ciskei, and the experiences of Black students at a predominantly white university. The final page records recipients of academic honours, full colours and half colours, providing additional evidence of student achievement and university life. As a primary institutional source, the programme supports genealogical and biographical research, verification of historical qualifications, and studies of Rhodes University's academic and social history, particularly its engagement with the Eastern Cape and Southern African society in the late 1980s.
