Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 7 April 1989, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the conferral of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees on Robin Allan Plumbridge and Theodoor van Wijk. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science and Pharmacy, alongside qualifications in Arts, Education and other disciplines. Postgraduate research covers biodiversity, fisheries science, geology, microbiology, computer science, hydrology, pharmaceutical sciences, economics and social work. Notable studies investigate the South African longline fishery and kingklip stocks, groundwater resources near Graaff-Reinet, the ecology of the Camdeboo and Sneeuberg regions, and investment decision-making in manufacturing in the Border region, Ciskei and Transkei. The programme also records extensive scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, including the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History and the B.A. Putterill Prize for ecological and conservation research in the Eastern Cape. As a primary institutional source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic distinctions, supporting genealogical and biographical research and documenting Rhodes University’s academic activities and regional research interests in the late 1980s.
