Abstract
This digitised archival document the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 9 April 1988, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. It identifies the university’s Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Deans of Faculties and Registrar, and records the order of proceedings, including the academic procession, singing of the university anthem and national anthem, presentation of qualifications, and conferral of honorary degrees. The ceremony included honorary Doctor of Science degrees for Stanley Gordon Shuttleworth and Doctor of Laws for Julian Ogilvie Thompson. The programme lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce and Pharmacy, among others, recording qualifications ranging from certificates and diplomas to undergraduate degrees, honours, master’s degrees and doctorates. The postgraduate research documented on pages 8–11 covers a wide range of disciplines, including ichthyology and fisheries science, marine ecology, entomology, microbiology, chemistry, geology, computer science, mathematics, commerce and pharmaceutical sciences. Research topics include fish population dynamics, the ecology of the Kariega estuary, digital image processing, expert systems, aquifer properties, and pharmaceutical analysis. The programme also records academic colours awarded to students and an extensive list of scholarships, bursaries and prizes, including awards for Eastern Cape history, environmental studies, ecology and conservation, fisheries science, sociology, social work and the natural sciences. Of particular regional historical significance is the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History, listed on page 12, alongside the B.A. Putterill Prize for master’s degree study in ecology and conservation in the Eastern Cape, listed on page 15. As a primary institutional record, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles, academic distinctions and scholarship recipients, providing valuable evidence for genealogical research, biographical studies, institutional history and the development of higher education and scientific research in South Africa during the late 1980s.
