Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 8 April 1988, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The sixteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the formal proceedings and records the awarding of honorary Doctor of Literature degrees to Cyril Lincoln Sibusiso Nyembezi and Michael Roberts. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Education, Divinity, Social Science, Law and other disciplines, documenting qualifications in journalism and media studies, librarianship, fine art, music, teacher education, theology, social work and law. Postgraduate research covers South African history, African literature, psychology, geography, linguistics and social issues. Notable studies examine the Port Elizabeth disturbances of October 1920, structural uses of music and dance in West African novels, sediment supply in semi-arid river channels, and the repression of men's emotional lives in relation to the oppression of women. The programme also records extensive scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes, including awards for Eastern Cape ecology and conservation, fisheries science, sociology, social work and the humanities. As a primary institutional source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications, research titles and academic distinctions, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into Rhodes University and higher education in South Africa during the late 1980s.
