Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 11 April 1987, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Education, Divinity, Social Science and Law, including qualifications in journalism and media studies, librarianship, fine art, music, teacher education, theology, social work and law. Postgraduate research addresses South African history, literature, Xhosa music, education, psychology, anthropology and regional development. Notable studies examine the development of Port Elizabeth harbour between 1820 and 1870, the history of the South African Indian Council, residential relocation in rural Ciskei, educational curricula in Transkei, and English-medium instruction in Ciskeian schools. Doctoral research explores Xhosa musical techniques, Xhosa beer-drinking traditions and oratory, the development of athletics in South Africa, Pauline Smith’s writing, and guidance and educational needs among school learners in Bophuthatswana. The programme also records the address by French Ambassador Pierre Boyer and lists academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded to students. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications and research titles, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into Rhodes University and higher education in South Africa during the 1980s.
