Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 11 April 1986, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, records the conferral of honorary degrees on musician Norman Stanley Bailey (Doctor of Music) and writer Es’kia Mphahlele (Doctor of Literature), and lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Education, Divinity, Social Science and Law. Qualifications include journalism and media studies, librarianship, fine art, music, teacher education, theology, social work and law. Postgraduate research addresses African languages, South African history, literature, psychology, labour relations, education and regional development. Notable studies examine hawking activities in Fingo Village, Grahamstown; Zulu personal naming; labour adjustments in manufacturing; traditional and modern legal procedures in the Ciskei; and the history of music education in Grahamstown between 1832 and 1950. Doctoral research includes Xhosa narrative and the linguistic properties of iintsomi texts, alongside the economy and efficiency of human locomotion. The programme concludes with academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded for achievement in 1985. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications, research topics and academic distinctions, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into Rhodes University and higher education in South Africa during the 1980s.
