Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 13 April 1985, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme documents the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Literature degree on Ernst van Heerden and lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Education and Divinity. Qualifications include librarianship, journalism, translation, music, fine art, teacher education, theology and the humanities. Postgraduate research addresses African land tenure and the Glen Grey Act, the development of East London, farming in East Griqualand, teacher stress in South African state schools, nutrition in the Eastern Cape and Ciskei, youth in children's homes, and the relationship between text and music in English song. Doctoral research also examines Afrikaans linguistics and literature, geographical nutrition patterns, and Pentecostalism in a South African community. The programme concludes with lists of academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded for achievement in 1984. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications, research topics and academic distinctions, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into Rhodes University and higher education in South Africa during the mid-1980s.
