Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 12 April 1985, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twenty-page programme documents the conferral of honorary Doctor of Laws and Doctor of Science degrees on Richard Stanley Cooke and Thomas Lodewyk Webb, respectively, and lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science, Law and Pharmacy. Qualifications span computer science, geology, chemistry, accounting, economics, social work, law and pharmaceutical sciences. Postgraduate research addresses South African geological formations, aquatic and coastal ecology, biological control of invasive cacti, computer programming, pharmaceutical analysis and environmental systems. The programme also records doctoral research on pyrotechnic combustion, biological control of prickly pear and psammolittoral research, alongside extensive listings of scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications, research topics and academic distinctions, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into Rhodes University and higher education in South Africa during the mid-1980s.
