Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 14 April 1984, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fourteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, records the awarding of honorary Doctor of Laws degrees to Cornelis Johannes Frederick Human and Denys Graham Kingwill, and lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science, Law and Pharmacy. It documents qualifications in computer science, fisheries science, accounting, economics, social work, law and pharmaceutical sciences, alongside honours, master’s and doctoral degrees. Postgraduate research addresses Eastern Cape fish ecology, groundwater resources, geological formations, biological pest control, pharmaceutical sciences and South African economic history. Notable topics include the management of mullet species in the Eastern Cape, shrimp ecology in the Bushmans River estuary, the geology of Grahamstown clay deposits, farm wages in the Albany District between 1957 and 1977, and public utility pricing in South Africa. The programme also records academic colours and distinctions awarded for achievements in 1983. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate achievements and provides insight into Rhodes University’s research priorities, scientific scholarship and institutional history in the 1980s, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
