Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 13 April 1984, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on John Ashton Chubb, and lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Education and Divinity. It documents qualifications in librarianship, journalism, fine art, music, teacher education and various humanities disciplines, alongside honours, master’s and doctoral degrees. Postgraduate research addresses Eastern Cape history, African mission history, regional economic development, education, linguistics and South African communities. Of particular regional significance are studies of the Keiskamma Irrigation Scheme, Grahamstown’s history, the New Brighton Presbyterian Mission Church and economic development in Ciskei. The programme also preserves scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work undertaken in 1983, including the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History. As a primary historical source, it supports institutional, biographical, genealogical and regional research into Rhodes University and higher education in the Eastern Cape during the 1980s.
