Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 16 April 1983, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The thirteen-page programme documents the conferral of honorary Doctor of Literature degrees on Athol Fugard and Joel Mervis and lists graduates across the Faculties of Arts, Divinity and Education. Qualifications include librarianship, journalism and media studies, fine art, music, theology, teacher education and postgraduate degrees in the humanities and social sciences. Research topics address the history of the Theopolis Mission, the Presbyterian Church Mission in the Transvaal, economic sanctions against South Africa, educational history in the Eastern Cape, and the experiences of Black mineworkers and residential communities in Grahamstown. The programme also records doctoral research on South African manufacturing and pricing, church history and victimology, alongside academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded for achievements in 1982. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate names, qualifications and research titles, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research into Rhodes University and higher education in South Africa during the early 1980s.
