Abstract
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Friday, 15 April 1983, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The fifteen-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the conferral of an honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Basil Edward Hersov. It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Commerce, Social Science, Law and Pharmacy, documenting qualifications in computer science, accounting, economics, social work, pharmaceutical sciences and other disciplines. Postgraduate research covers geology, radio astronomy, ecology, fisheries science, psychology, economics and pharmaceutical research. Notable topics include biological control of jointed cactus, fish management in the Orange River, tick ecology, vegetable pricing at the East London municipal market, and the economic implications of education in South Africa. The programme also records scholarships, bursaries and academic prizes awarded for work undertaken in 1982, including the Ernest Oppenheimer Trust Scholarship for 1820 Settler and Eastern Cape History and the Ian Mackenzie Scholarship for Environmental Studies. As a primary historical source, it preserves graduate achievements and research interests, providing valuable evidence of Rhodes University’s academic activities and institutional history in the early 1980s and supporting biographical, genealogical and regional historical research.
