Abstract
-
This digitised archival document records the Rhodes University graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 17 April 1982, at the 1820 Settlers National Monument in Grahamstown. The twelve-page programme identifies university officeholders, outlines the ceremonial proceedings and records the awarding of honorary degrees to James Beaufort Sutherland (Doctor of Laws) and Cuthbert John Skead (Doctor of Philosophy). It lists graduates across the Faculties of Science, Pharmacy, Commerce, Social Science and Law, documenting qualifications in computer science, geology, ecology, accounting, economics, social work and pharmaceutical sciences. Postgraduate research covers southern African biodiversity, fisheries ecology, geology, plant science, pharmaceutical chemistry and economic development. Notable studies investigate diatoms in the Sundays and Great Fish rivers, the ecology of the Keiskamma River and Estuary, vegetation in the Andries Vosloo Kudu Reserve, biological control of invasive cactus, and the geology of the Bushveld Complex. Doctoral research includes the taxonomy of freshwater diatoms, insect-based weed control, the ecology of the Karoo caterpillar and theories of economic underdevelopment. The final page records academic honours, colours and half-colours awarded for achievement in 1981. As a primary historical source, the programme preserves graduate names, qualifications, research topics and academic distinctions, supporting biographical, genealogical and regional research into Rhodes University and higher education in South Africa during the early 1980s.
